"Good God!"is my first reaction. If one removes rose colour glasses from the quaint old times, this and many other such cases turn up. Are we better off today? Is this hard to imagine? Well... Maybe, hopefully in the age of dot. com people this couldn't happen. Then again, there's a lot of money at stake and human nature being what it is... If death is the tax one pays for living, what is the cost of being alive?

What a read this is, and makes me wonder if we have really moved on that much at all but I hope so. The mind absolutely boggles at such a travesty. Thank you.

What a harrowing display of greed. "The love of money..." and all of that. My skin is crawling, because this isn't a remote example of an extreme case. In other words, I think Britney Spears might find this account difficult to read.

Thank you for sharing this.

Goodness me, is my (not the exact words I used) reaction. What a jaw dropping story and just incomprehensible what this young lady endured. Thank you for sharing this, I had no idea.

Such a fascinating story and you tell it extremely well, Laura. As your other readers say, it certainly has relevance today- I am reminded of the cruel treatment handed out to another modern heiress, Paris Hilton who was sent to a ‘troubled teen’ wilderness camp. And of course Britney Spears. I kind of admire Mary’s bid for independence through Catholic conversion! Not that it did her any good...

Horrifying and wonder if this is one case when being poorer would have been advantageous. So insightful, thanks.

This is staggering Laura, in fact, it's sobering and my legal mind screams 'Prenup'. This poor child, because that's exactly what she was, surrounded by sharks and charlatans pretending to be her carers, sold off to the highest bidder. This was a truly remarkable read that got my blood boiling. That thirst for wealth remains unquenchable, does it not. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to this story.
