I wrote last week about Muriel Spark, and mentioned en passant that she has been characterized as a ‘difficult woman’. Whatever that means. What it really means is that she was a bit too gifted for general comfort: talent (especially in women) is more easily admired when it can be categorized, which hers most definitely cannot.
